Turkish Cement Sector has opened its doors to Sustainable Development

| Open Week activities, prepared traditionally by Turkish Cement Manufacturers’ Association (TÇMB), are held between April 26th - May 4th. During these activities of which the main theme of this year being “Sustainability”, 11 cement manufacturers have opened doors to university students to inform them about both cement production and sustainability. | ![]() |
| As part of Open Week Activities, Mustafa Güçlü, Vice Chairman of TÇMB, and Board Members have participated the press meeting organized in Mersin Çimsa factory. Güçlü, who expressed the added value by figures, revealed by Turkish economy related to the production background of Turkish cement sector for 100 years, underlined that the production capacity of the sector hit 103 million tons/year by the end of 2009 and that Turkish cement sector has become the production and export champion in Europe, also ranks in the first 10 producers and first 3 exporters in the world. |
| Güçlü declared that the sector, which employs almost 25.000 people including service providing industries, ended 2009 with production growth of 5 % due to the record rising in exports and meanwhile domestic market contracted 1.5 % at the same period. Güçlü, Vice chairman of TÇMB, pointed that the cement sector is the indicator of the initial signals of recovery or descending periods in the economy. He also said that they all consider 2010 as a recovery period and 2011 as a growth period of the sector and expectations for 2010 are around 2 % - 4 % increase in domestic cement demand. |
| Cement is the leader sector on sustainable growth Güçlü has indicated that the environmental vision of Turkish Cement sector corresponds with the principles of sustainable development. “While growing, the cement industry became the leading sector on generalization of sustainable development by realizing environmental responsibilities. The production is carried out in accordance with all national law and legislations related to environmental components such as waste water discharges, soil pollution, waste reduction and elimination. Güçlü noted that; Environmental measurements are performed in order to get emission permissions and to follow control measurements are applied at by using devices for constant measurements All environmental measurements of the sector are performed by accredited laboratories and dust emissions are prevented by the ‘stack gas dust removal systems’. After getting all environmental permissions, wastes are used as an alternative energy source. |
