During the meeting held on 10 February, the situation of the construction sector was discussed in view of the ‘’Copenhagen Agreement” and the ‘’Environment Chapter Opened in EU.’’ Areas of environmental standards in which Turkey has shown progress, the harmonization process for the criteria and its reflections of this process on the sector were among the topics. It was underlined that the harmonization process for the Kyoto Protocol and the EU Environment Legislation will have direct effect on the construction sector, as is the case for many other sectors, requiring serious investments in this field.
Adnan İğnebekçili expressed his hopes that “Position Document of Turkey” related to the Copenhagen Agreement and the negotiations to be carried out with EU will be in a framework reflecting the views of the sector. He added “It is for sure that the harmonization process for the Kyoto Protocol and EU Environment Legislation will be beneficial to improve the quality of life of our people and to put development models into effect in accordance with the environment. However, during this period it is indispensable for all sectors, our industry being in the first place, to make serious technological investments, especially constructing new units to cover the infrastructural deficiencies. Thus, it may be necessary for the sector to make technological investments, construct new units and waste treatment systems. Considerable time and large amounts for finance are required to complete all this work.

In addition, we would like to state the importance of our authorized experts also participating in EU Environment Chapter discussions and in the preparation of the Position Document in the UN Parties Conference to be held in Mexico in 2010, for the high benefits of our sector and the economy of our country”.
